The recorded history of the bay began in 1841, with its discovery by the Wikes Expedition. The men in the gig that first rowed into Gig Harbor were simply exploring the narrow channel that turned out to be the entrance to the sheltered harbor. From that day on the Harbor was know as “Gig Harbor”.
